Help Do Your Part with Electronic Recycling You may or may not have heard of electronic recycling. This process is not that much different from traditional recycling of plastic, metal and paper. The main problem is that it isn’t as well-known or convenient as curb-side recycling. However, because of many environmental concerns, electronic recycling is becoming more and more important. One of the main reasons that electronics recycling is so important is e-waste. E-waste is the result of improper disposal of electronics. Obsolete or outdated computers, cell phones, printers, televisions, and countless other devises used in our daily lives are often casually tossed in a dumpster, where its effects on the environment are starting to take its toll. One particularly problematic element of e-waste is cathode tube rays (CRT) which are found in television sets, computer monitors and other video display devices. These CRT’s, found in devices throughout our homes and work offices, are becoming a leading cause of hazardous waste. CRT’s are just one example of the many electronic devices that are tossed out without any though to the detrimental environmental impact it may cause. To help alleviate this problem, electronic recycling has become a popular and effective solution to help reduce e-waste. Electronics recycling such as computer recycling is an easy way to get rid of your obsolete, out of date or broken computer without adding harmful chemicals to landfills. There are other great reasons to recycle computers. When you throw out a computer, anyone can pick it up and may be able to access the hard drive and your personal information; even if it’s broken and you deleted information. Many electronic recycling centers offer proof of destruction so that you can be assured your computer is recycled and that no one can access any information that may have been left on it. Everyday e-waste is filled with hazardous elements and compounds that can leak into soil and find its way into the food chain and water supply. Items you may have never thought of such as cell phones, printers, computer monitors, keyboards, stereo equipment and many other everyday things are full of hazardous materials that need to be properly disposed of before they can leech into our natural resources. Because of the awareness to these new dangers, legislation and technological advances have helped to create methods for us to be more responsible and capable of properly disposing of these devices. Look for centers in your area that can recycle your electronics; it’s worth your time.
