Laptops drive out desktop PC
13th January 2009
The company iSuppli made up a curious report, which gives a comprehensive picture of the future development of modern computer industry. The research shows that a laptop is recognized as the most promising form-factor of all present in the modern computer industry.
By the third quarter of this year, sales of laptop computers for the first time surpassed sales of desktop ones. Analysts from iSuppli find the fact a turning point in the history of the industry. Despite a slight advantage of laptops units sold (compare: 38.6 million against 38.5), the fact can not be omitted. The report authors point out that it is the co called netbook that led to the growing popularity of portable computers.
However, giants of the desktop machines industry do not seem to suffer the situation too bitterly. For instance, HP continues retaining its 18.8% of the world market, and its sales for the reporting period amounted to 14.9 million units. The second position in the list belongs to Dell (13.9% of the market and more than 11 million computers sold). Then follow such companies as Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba.
