Transfer Jet: new technology by Sony
16th January 2008
At the largest exhibition of consumer electronics CES 2008, held in Las Vegas the other day, Sony Corporation demonstrated a working model of a wireless data transmission system Transfer Jet intended for integration into a variety of portable devices. According to the specifications, with the help of Transfer Jet you can transfer data at speeds of from 375 to 560 Mb per second - faster than via USB 2.0 or IEEE1394 FireWire.
Sony representatives carried out the transfer of 45 images in VGA-resolution from a digital camera to the receiver, displaying the picture on the television panel. Both receiver and camera were equipped with the module Transfer Jet.
The head of Sony research unit said that the development of the technology took about two years. Another year will be required to prepare Transfer Jet to commercial use. Transfer Jet is based on the latest wireless technology Short Range NFC (Near Field Communication), developed by Sony, and has nothing to do with the Felica technology, used in smart cards and mobile phones, reports PC World.
Transfer Jet runs at the rate of 4.2 GHz and does not provide any data protection, as the radius of the system does not exceed a few centimeters.
