Vulnerability in Excel 2003
23rd January 2008
The company Secunia reported on the discovery of a new dangerous vulnerability in Excel. The danger threatens users using Excel 2003 with an uninstalled second package of updates (Service Pack 2). Microsoft has already issued an information note of vulnerability. However, it does not disclose details, but simply provides tips on how not to become a victim of detractors, who could use the vulnerability.
Microsoft recommends not to open table files received from unreliable sources, as well as not to use the tool Isolated Compatibility Environment (MOICE), which is a part of Office Compatibility Pack, allowing files to be converted to the new Office Open XML format. By using Compatibility Pack converted files can be opened in Excel 2003.
