Brazil brings computer education to schools
27th February 2009
More than 350 000 of virtual workstations will be deployed in Brazilian secondary schools within the large and ambitious project, initiated by the Ministry of Education of Brazil.
The program authors reported that one workstation costs less than $50. Each computer will be divided into 10 independent virtual machines running under Linux. Thus, millions of pupils will be able to acquire necessary skills to work with common applications and learn about the Internet.
At the first phase of the project in some rural schools 18'750 work stations were established. The next stage implies establishing virtual workstations in the rest of Brazilian schools.
In general, Brazil has been thinking of improving the level of computer education since 2003. The government has offered a lot of variants but all of them crashed on the trivial lack of money. Finally, they found a way out: they simply decided to create several workstations on each machine.
