China becomes leader by number of Internet users

The number of Internet users in China has exceeded 210 million, reports Associated Press. Over the past year, more 73 million Chinese went online, and analysts predict that in 2008 the country will become an absolute leader in the world by the number of people with access to the World Network. By the way, China is also the leader by cell-phones owners: 539.4 million people. According to the China Information Centre of Network Technologies, the fastest Internet access spread can be observed in rural areas by increasing the income level and infrastructure development.
Strict censorship of traditional media, too, pushes Chinese people to use Internet. By means of the authorities, the access to many websites in China is limited, but information is filtered not as active as in the printed press and on TV. Nevertheless, China Government is trying to take a global network under control.
