False installer Apple iWork'09 threatens Macs
20th February 2009
Symantec warned of the presence of a trojan in pirated copies of Apple iWork'09. The malicious code is spread through BitTorrent. The false installer of iWork'09 has the name of the file iWork09.zip so that users could easily take it for a legitimate version of Apple. Meanwhile, the real version of iWork'09, supplied by Apple, is called iWork09Trial.dmg.
OSX.iWork can infect Mac computers with the malicious computer code, connecting it with a remote system. Thus, hackers can steal personal info in order to rob users of money.
Nevertheless, Symantec Security Response considers OSX.iWork as a low-level threat, but they also say, that the real threat consists not in the code itself, but in a huge number of people using it. The point is that the world financial crisis reduces users` capability to buy legal software making them turn to pirate versions.
