Foomatic 4.0.0: switching to PDF as the primary format
3rd February 2009
OpenPrinting`s forum of announcements, supported by Linux Foundation, published a new release of the adjustable printing filter Foomatic, often used in conjunction with the printing system UNIX (CUPS), - 4.0.0.
The main innovation this release is the support of printing PDF documents. PDF in Foomatic replaced the classic PostScript as a standard print format.
The rest of new features include the use of PDF-extensions to CUPS for customizable options, which are now available via graphical administration bars (Web-interface, GTK+). A universal print filter foomatic-rip has been rewritten in the C language, so it no longer requires reference to Perl. Now you can display more detailed information about the driver. There is also a new search drivers system, and some improvements aimed at increasing flexibility.
