Lotus Notes: new version will include official support of Ubuntu Linux

IBM plans to implement in the future version of Lotus Notes 8.5 the official support of Ubuntu Linux operating system 7.0. At least, such information was provided by Computer World, referring to the statements of IMB under the conference Lotusphere 2008 in Orlando (Florida).
The package Lotus Notes combines the features of e-mail, calendar and scheduler, as well as offers users special means of working together and tools to enhance performance. Lotus Notes version 8.0.1 has a partial support of Ubuntu Linux platform. And, starting with version 8.5, IBM intends to provide full support of Ubuntu Linux OS. Lotus Notes 8.5 is planned to be released in the second half of this year.
In addition, the support of Ubuntu Linux will be offered to users of the free set of applications Lotus Symphony as well. Lotus Symphony is based on the developments of the OpenOffice.org project participants. The package includes text editor, table editor and a program for creating presentations.
IBM notes that at the moment Linux OS has reached such level of development, since which it can be introduced to corporate PCs in large number. Moreover, IBM is increasingly gets requests from customers wishing to receive the quality support of Linux.
It is interesting enough, that one of the main obstacles to the mass spread of Linux, remains limited support of peripheral devices, in particular, printers and Wi-Fi adapters.
