Microsoft releases beta version of the tool to deal with DoS-attacks

27th February 2009

Microsoft announced releasing beta version of The Dynamic IP Restrictions Extension for IIS 7.0 server to combat DoS-attacks.
The release of The Dynamic IP Restrictions Extension became a logical continuation of the previous initiative, which began form releasing three tools for IT administrators, database administrators and developers of Web applications - these tools were designed to block attacks by insertion of foreign code into SQL languages (SQL Injection). The Dynamic IP Restrictions Extension is available in versions for 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.
The analysis and blocking suspicious behavior of HTTP-clients through temporary addresses can be performed both at the level of a web server and at the level of an individual web site.
Microsoft points out a few main features of the product. First, when blocking IP-address, it takes into account the number of simultaneous requests: if a HTTP-client makes too many requests at once, its address is blocked. The Dynamic IP Restrictions Extension offers several types of reactions to suspicious behavior. For example, the module can send to a blocked HTTP-client the response of 403 or 404, or close the connection without any response. Another key advantage of the solution is the full support of IPv6.
