Vista`s quality is higher than that of Win XP
3rd February 2008
The Security Strategies Director of Microsoft in his blog published a report on the number of vulnerabilities discovered in Windows Vista and other operating systems in the first year after their release.
According to the statistics, during the first year after announcing Windows Vista, Microsoft has released seventeen security bulletins for this program platform. By comparison, 30 security bulletins were released for WinXP in twelve months. Windows Vista turned out a better OS by the number of patched holes: only36 of them, whereas in Windows XP 65 vulnerabilities were found.
The abovementioned report also provides information on how many holes were eliminated in the first year after the release of competing operating systems. In particular, Mac OS X 10.4 in the first twelve months could “boast” 116 fixed bugs. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Workstation and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS for the same time 360 and 224 vulnerabilities were fixed, respectively.
However, the results of the analysis should not be viewed as an indicator of the safety of an operating system. Nevertheless, the figures obtained suggest that the quality of Windows Vista is higher compared to its predecessor Windows XP.
