Google Summer of Code unites students again

Google started accepting applications to participate in a three-month event Google Summer of Code 2008, during which students-developers of open-source programs with the support of Google will be able to concentrate on the development of their projects. The program Google Summer of Code was launched in 2005. That time the company worked with 40 organizations, in 2006 their number grew to a hundred, and last year - to 130. Last summer, the program involved 900 students and nearly 1500 mentors from 90 countries. Those students, whose projects are selected, will receive scholarships in the amount of $ 4500 for a period of three months to work hard on their projects. Google puts the following objectives:
to inspire young developers to participate in the creation of open source software;
to provide students studying Computer Science, with the ability to work in areas related to their research during the summer;
to introduce students to the process of development of real software systems;
to get more publicly available open source code;
to attract new developers to the open source projects.
