Microsoft Live OneCare took last place in an independent test of anti-virus software

10th March 2007

A specialist of computer security Andreas Clementi, the creator of the site Comparatives AV, on which regularly ratings of popular anti-virus packages are put, held a regular comparative testing of the latest versions of anti-virus software. 17 anti-virus packages took part in the independent test among them were Anti–Virus 10 Professional Plus, FortiClient 3.0.308, McAfee VirusScan 11.1.124, Symantec Norton AntiVirus 14.0.0.89, etc. Before the testing, the author has updated antiviruses and set the best options on the packages. One million samples of various harmful software codes - from worms to Trojans – were used in the test. As a result, the first place in the number of "caught " viruses (99.45%) belongs to anti-virus package Virus Kit from G Data Security Software, the second – to The TrustPort Antivirus Workstation 2.5.0.957 (99.36%), while the bronze went to the Antivir Personal Edition 7.03.01.34 Premium (98.85%). Packages of Secure Anti-Virus 2007 7.01.128 and Khaspersky Anti-virus were on the fourth (97.91%) and fifth (97.89%) places respectively. Among the outsiders are AntiVirus (sixth position, 96.83%), FortiClient 3.0.308 (10th place, 93.99%), and McAfee VirusScan 11.1.124 (14th place, 91.63%). It is remarkable, that the complex security support system Microsoft OneCare Live took the last place and could cope only with 82.40% harmful code. It should be recalled, that Live OneCare includes antivirus with automatically updated databases, tools for detecting spyware, firewall and utilities for set up of Windows OS. In addition, Windows OneCare Live provides a possibility to create back up copies of very important information. According to Clementi, a failure of Microsoft anti-virus was not a surprise for him because exactly the same result Windows Live OneCare demonstrated in another recent independent testing. In Clementi’s testing traditionally participate packages capable to cope, as a minimum, with 85% of harmful code. Thus, this result of Microsoft makes possibility of Windows Live OneCare to take part in the next test, quite doubtful, reports TechWeb.
