Panda Software`s report about viruses and intrusions

Technology news and updates blog article Panda Software`s report about viruses and intrusions

23rd March 2007

The Panda Software Company presented a report about viruses and popular threats of the last week. The specialists of the company warned users about new worm Piggi.B, trojan ReverseClick.A, advertising program VideoCach and potentially unwanted program XPCSpy. Trojan ReverseClick.A was created to change the mouse keys functions, as well as to block the launch of executable files. Launching this program can also lead to disappearance of the drive icons, desktop icons, disable the registry editor and the Task Manager. In addition, contextual menus stop working, which are launched by the right mouse keys. VideoCach is an advertising program meant for fraudulent promotion of certain security applications. To conceal its activity, the program uses rootkits technologies. VideoCach creates shortcuts on the desktop and demonstrates false warnings of contamination. It also offers Internet Explorer windows, giving users misinformation that harmful software is installed on their PC. The advertising program includes links to the web pages where you can download or buy its security applications of doubtful quality. When started, such applications give horrible verification results and offer to buy programs in order to get rid of the fake viruses. XPCSpy also uses rootkits technologies to conceal their activity. This potentially unwanted program is meant for the surveillance of users on the computers it attacks. It performs such actions as copying screenshots, records pressing the buttons, saves information on the sites visited, as well as sent the outgoing letters and logs of ICQ. Since XPCSpy has rootkits properties, it did not show any visible signs of presence on your computer. It conceals executable processes and folders, which hold software components and reports. That is why the program is very difficult to identify and remove. Piggi.B worm also uses rootkits technologies to conceal the system infection. Piggi.B copies itself to a file iexplore.exe in the folder Program Files, and the original file (belonging to the known internet-browser) moves to a subfolder system in the Windows directory. As a result, each time user starts Internet Explorer user actually starts Piggi.B.
