Nintendo Wii helps British teenagers to keep fit
7th April 2009
The number of British teenagers with the tendency to obesity is increasing year in year out. Naturally, this is one of the greatest concerns of the country public health services. The number of male students suffering from overweight increased from 0.9 % in 1995 to 17.3 % in 2006. A number of girls faced the same problem for the same period increased from 12 to 14.7 %.
According to British scientists, modern game consoles, such as the Nintendo Wii for instance, can become of a great use in solving this problem and, thus, should be recommended to young people. To confirm (or disprove) the statement a special research team was formed, which included representatives of GameCity, promoting interactive entertainment, scientists from the Nottingham Trent University, representatives from the Health Department and doctors from the Nottingham University Hospital.
In addition, gaming consoles enable children to experience the recommended physical activity at home. However, the appreciable effect can be achieved only in combination with working out at least three times a week.
