OpenOffice.org 2.2 - real alternative to Office 2007?

OpenOffice.org association has released version 2.2 of the popular office package open-source which is updating OpenOffice components, allowing to work with text, databases, tables and create presentations. OpenOffice.org developers are positioning its product now as a “real alternative” to Microsoft Office 2007. In this update they focused the attention on the security - there has been eliminated the four critical vulnerabilities discovered in the last few months. In press-release OpenOffice.org 2.2 they reported that “the users will notice immediately the improvement of quality of test displaying in all components of OpenOffice.org”. The released update seems to become the preparation of OpenOffice to the Open Document Format battle, which is developed at the sponsorship of Sun, for the leadership among open document formats. It is no secret that practically the only competitor to ODF is Office Open XML developed by Microsoft including with the support of Novell (for all that official “ally”), Intel, Toshiba and Apple. ODF takes the lead in informal confrontation so far, which was recently accepted by the government of France after Massachusetts University as a priority.
