OpenOffice.org 3 enjoys immense popularity
26th April 2009
The developers of the free office pack OpenOffice.org reported that the third version of the program (released mid-October) has been downloaded by 50 million people. And it is only downloads from the OpenOffice.org official site! So, the actual data are much, much higher.
One of the main innovations in OpenOffice.org 3 is the support of a new format called Open XML (.Docx, .Xlsx, .Pptx), used when saving MS Office 2007 docs. In addition, version 3.0 supports the latest format of ODF 1.2 for saving docs by default.
The Writer word processor now can display pages side by side and add comments on. The spreadsheet editor of Calc has new visual themes, the maximum number of lines increased to 1024. As for the program for creating presentations Impress: now you can create spreadsheets. It is also worth while mentioning an updated appearance of the program and the welcome window, meant to help users select a needed app.
