BSD OS contains 25 y.o. bug!
26th May 2008
BSD operating systems turned out to contain a bug, whose age is almost 25 (!) years.
The problem is related to the implementation of the library *dir(). The error leads to a malfunction of the system Samba while reading the contents of certain files on MS-DOS sections. Samba is a package of open source, allowing the use of Unix- or Linux-servers in the networks of Microsoft, based on protocols Server Message Block / Common Internet File System (SMB / CIFS). The product Samba enables interaction of client machines based on Windows with file servers and print servers under the administration of Unix-like operating systems.
The library *dir () has been built into more than two dozen software products. Therefore, the bug is presented in all versions of BSD, including OpenBSD and Mac OS X platforms.
Developers bring users apologies for the fact that the bug`s identifying and solving took them 25 years.
