Firefox and OpenGL developers will produce 3D browser games
1st May 2009
Mozilla and Khronos consortium, supervising the development of graphic cross-platform interface OpenGL, want to create a technology that would allow 3D games to run in a browser, Cnet News writes. Due to the new standard browser-based applications will be able to use the resources of the computer graphics subsystem. Khronos, which have recently announced OpenGL 3.1, has already established a working group “Accelerated 3D on Web” for developing of specifications. Khronos hopes to release the first version of the specification during 12 months. Mozilla plans to include the support for graphics accelerators in the browser after the release of Firefox 3.5. Initially, this function is not integrated into the browser; it will be released as add-in. 3D games for browser are becoming more popular. Thus, id Software has developed a browser-game Quake Live - analog to Quake III Arena in all parameters, including graphics. For Quake Live to operate it requires a special plug-in. Because of this the game does not support some browsers and platforms.
