First beta version of free Flash-player Gnash
7th May 2008
The first beta version of Flash-player with open source Gnash - 0.8.2 has been released.
The Gnash source code is distributed under the license of GNU GPLv3, can be used as a player of SWF (Shockwave Flash) files and as a plugin for Web-browsers. According to the organization Open Media Now Foundation (OMNow), sponsoring the development, Gnash is meant not only for computers but also for gaming, embedded devices, as well as for consumer electronics.
Gnash code is based on the GPLFlash project developments and was originally created as a user interface to digital stereo (STB). The player Gnash works as a plug-in for Firefox, Mozilla, Konqueror and NetFront; it is supported as a Flash-player by graphical environments of KDE and GNOME (versions for Darwin and Windows are being developed), runs under embedded software platforms GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD. Gnash supports MIPS, PowerPC, ARM as well.
