Google charged of illegally use of Android trademark
25th May 2009
Google together with other 45 companies is accused of illegally use of the trademark of Android, reports Vnunet. The action was filed in the Chicago federal court by Erich Specht, the owner of the company Android Data Corp.
He registered the Android trademark in the United States Patent Office (USPTO) five years ago. Currently, his company develops the software branded Android. Specht demands the court to prevent Google and companies of the Open Handset Alliance to use this trademark. Also, he insists on compensation for damages. It is noticeable that Google has already tried to register the trademark of Android in October 2007. However, USPTO turned down the application. The mobile platform of Google Android was introduced in late 2007. It is based on the Linux core and open source components. Companies supporting this platform comprise the Open Handset Alliance. The first smartphone based on Android was presented on September, 23, 2008. At the moment, there are a dozen of such devices at the market.
