Windows Longhorn received official name - Server 2008
24th May 2007
At WinHEC conference Microsoft for the first time presented the official name for Windows Server 2008, previously known under the code name Longhorn. At present, Server 2008 is on beta testing and the final version is expected in the second half of the year.
Although the official name of the platform we have learned only today, many suspected what it will be. Doubts were only in the year - 2007 or 2008.
The product will be available in four versions, just as the previous version of the platform Windows Server 2003. On the basis of the system lie the same functions as in Windows Vista, but they added some special features which relate to work on servers.
One of the novelties of Windows Server is a command-line PowerShell. It resembles the command line used in Unix systems, and is designed to automate and control tasks on servers and working computers under Windows. Previously, it was assumed that it will be run under Vista, but Microsoft rejected it, stating that the full implementation of the technology will still take several years. Using a new command line, administrators will be able to perform all actions, which previously had to be done from graphic interface.
Also, they made changes in the domain controllers - now there is an opportunity to set up domain controllers “read-only”.
