A Major Breakthrough In The Biotech World
9th June 2010
Craig Venter, a controversial American biologist and entrepreneur, has created a breakthrough in technologic as well as scientific world by creating artificial life for the first time and that is the synthesis of a tiny new bacterium or more appropriately a "synthetic cell" that is controlled by man made DNA. It is reported that, this breakthrough is not a one day effort but, a result of 15 years of research, and the total cost on this technological advancement is more then $47 million.
According to the news sources, the sole purpose of creating this artificial life is to create and produce energy. Moreover, it could also be used as a tool for pollution cleanup, speedy vaccine production, water cleaning, and for production of chemicals and food ingredients. But, the critics are not much happy with this breakthrough and are even raising the security concerns such as; this man made microbe could be escaped form the labs and could be used for destructive purposes, such as for terrorism by the terrorists. However, still this breakthrough has proved to be a historical achievement in the field of biology and bio technology, keeping aside the security concerns and risks involved in it.
