Flickr has become a multilingual service
24th June 2007
The popular photo service Flickr owned by Yahoo has announced its expansion and building of its branches in seven European countries. The service has been functioning for three years so far, the people of the United States being almost half of its users. Electronic branches of Flickr will be opened in France, Germany, Korea, Italy, Portugal, Spain and China. Now, along with the original service the Japanese version of the site is working, managed independently by Yahoo Japan.
According to comScore, Flickr is monthly visited by 24 million active users, 55% of the visitors living outside the United States. Flickr has become the first service that made popular the idea of tags for pictures - key words or phrases attached to the images for easy search. Currently there are 12.5 million unique tags and about 525 million photos available on the site. However, a Chinese version could have been postponed, as the situation with blocking images on Flickr service in China has still not been clarified. Despite all attempts of Flickr`authorities, the officials did not comment on the situation, thus, it remains unclear when the official China would like to explain their actions.
