Gentoo Linux 2008.0 is released

The developers of Gentoo project have released the final version of the fresh release of its popular Linux distributive called Gentoo Linux 2008.0. The new assembly is remarkable for the improved installation procedure, expanded equipment support and replacement of GNOME graphical shell to more compact and cost-effective Xfce technology. At the moment, the huge audience of Gentoo admirers can obtain standard installation kits and the image of the boot LiveCD. LiveDVD boot disks for x86 and AMD64 platforms is not yet available because of unmentioned technical difficulties, but the developers promise to release them at the earliest opportunity. The serious modernization of the installation procedure now allows you to install the system freely without connecting to the network and the Internet only by a single boot disk LiveCD. The transition to a core of 2.6.24 version has ensured the support of many new drivers, released since the appearance of 2007.0 version. Also, a system of profiles was subjected to large processing â€“ the new structure of these profiles provides more effective search for redundancies in installed components. Profiles of installed packages now are in subfolder /usr/portage/profiles/ inside the folder default/linux/, and not in default-linux /, as before. The use of Xfce graphical shell instead of GNOME at LiveCD boot disk helps you to save disk space. Despite of Xfce use as a standard shell, the user can always assemble and set KDE and GNOME environments of the attached incoming text. The most important innovation of Gentoo 2008.0, in developersâ€™ opinion, is the package management system Portage 2.1.4.4 â€“ management with the help of ebuild console now provides more effective control of installed packages and dependencies between them. Besides, it should be noted that at the heart of Gentoo 2008.0 are most modern versions of key technologies: Xfce 4.4.2 graphical shell, gcc 4.1.2 compiler and basic library of applied components glibc 2.6.1.
