DAVID 1.5: 3D scanning
27th August 2007
A new version of DAVID has been released, a free program, which allows performing three-dimensional scanning of objects and transforming the result into models that can be imported to 3D- editors.
To work with this program you`ll need a computer and a camera connected to it (a webcam matches), and a laser level. The object should be set in the corner of the room before the two planes, located at 90 degrees with respect to each other. Then you`ll have to pick up a laser level, turn on the camera, point the laser to the target and begin "brushing" the laser line over it. In doing so, the program will automatically evaluate 3D- coordinates of the scanned surface.
Immediately after scanning the received 3D- model can be viewed in the integrated into the program OpenGL- viewer. The result can be saved in OBJ format and used to work with different 3D- editors. There is also a commercial version of the program DAVID-Shapefusion, designed for combining several scans, made from different sides into a single model.
The latest version was added with a feature of saving all scans in a single file, a button “Combine” , increased accuracy of the scanning.
