Forswear Fees Of The Video Patent Holders
30th August 2010
In what seems to be one effort for diminishing the appeal of the WebM project which has been backed by Google, Opera, Mozilla, among many of the others, MPEG LA, which is a group that is used for managing the pools of the patents on behalf of the participating companies, has declared that it's the AVC Patent Portfolio License would be continue to remain free to the licensees who are delivering the Internet video for free to the end users till the time their License is valid. The licensees who deliver to the paid video of the internet would continue to have to pay for a license fee.
The AVC Patent Portfolio would be covering the video codec of H.264. It has been licensed on the behalf of 27 of the companies which also include Microsoft and Apple, both of which are supporting H.264 in their software of media as well as the browser. However the organizations which support the open source software such as the Mozilla have refused for supporting the H.264 for the fear of the future fees related to the licensing. It has been said by MPEG LA in February that it would not be charging the royalties for the AVC Patent Portfolio from the month of January 1, 2011 to the 31st of December in the year 2015.
