Mozilla may pass Thunderbird to other developers
4th August 2007
Mozilla Foundation is thinking over the possibility of setting up a separate organization that will develop the mail client Thunderbird. This would enable it to concentrate on elaborating Firefox.
Executive Director of Mozilla Mitchell Baker wrote in her blog that the corporation pays little attention to Thunderbird because it is focused on Firefox, and commented that the situation is unlikely to change in the near future. Therefore, she suggested three ways of development for Thunderbird:
Creating a non-profit organization like Mozilla Foundation,
Creating a separate entity of Mozilla Foundation, which would develop only Thunderbird
Or make Thunderbird one of the projects supported by the communities. A vivid example of such projects is SeaMonkey.
