Research Experiment Goes Haywire
31st August 2010
An experiment turned out to be a total mess on Friday, as it disrupted the number of internet traffic to quite an extent. This experiment was being carried on by the Duke University and a European group for managing internet resources. If the issue would not have been noticed, the results and consequently the damage could have been worse than can be imagined.
According to the details, RIPE NCC (Reseaux IP Europeens Network Coordination Centre) and Duke were busy in running their experiment in which the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) was involved as well. It was involved, as routers needed to know about the destination of their internet traffic. Now when RIP started announcing the routes to BGP, these were configured unlike they are being configured normally, and the reason behind this was the experiment that was being carried on at the time. As a result of all this, the data started passing on from one router to another, and started causing problems to interne traffic. But, as soon as the RIPENCC found out the issue, they stopped the announcement, as there seemed to be a problem with the routers, which was the right thing to do as then the damage could have been far worse.
