SAN Failure Of Virginia Repairs Caused Statewide Outage
30th August 2010
The arm of the IT operations of Virginia has repaired the cause of the IT system failure statewide which has affected the online services as well as the network operations of greater than 20 of the agencies which also include the Department of Motor Vehicles i.e. the DMV. The outage happened when the storage area network of EMC and its redundancy failed as according to the Virginia Information Technologies Agency. When this thing happened, 228 of the servers attached to the network which has hosted the shared applications as well as the software that are used statewide - were not able to access the data.
The SAN had been repaired by the afternoon of Friday and the technicians had brought the servers back online. The agencies also started to test the applications to see if they had been working properly again as said by Marcella Williamson - the spokeswoman of VITA through an email. VITA was created in the year 2003 for the sake of maintaining as well as modernizing the IT operations of the state. The website of VITA was also not functioning in the proper manner and its homepage was loading a message which said that this site is temporarily experiencing some technical difficulties and also that the restoration activities are going on.
