Zip became the best program at SourceForge.net
4th August 2007
The community of open-source projects SourceForge.net summed up the results of the second annual competition among best applications. All community members (more than 1.6 million) could vote for their favorite open-source projects. Awards were won in 11 categories, in each of which initially 10 finalists were selected and then the winner was determined.
The best project became 7-Zip archiver, which also won a prize for the best technical design. Relational database Firebird became the best corporate project, and won the prize for the best technical support as well.
Small surprise to the organizers was the fact that in the nomination “The Best New Project” the peering client eMule won, although the project was first presented at SourceForge.net in 2002. That's why in this nomination two winners have been selected, the second became Launchy, a program for launching applications for Windows. The program Audacity won the award as the best multi media project, phpBB - as the best project of communication between people, phpMyAdmin has been recognized as the best tool for system administrators, ScummVM - as the best program for gamers, and TortoiseSVN - as most useful tool for application developers.
