60-year-old hacker blackmailed Maserati
29th September 2008
A 60-year-old resident of California, is accused of hacking the site of Maserati and using stolen data to blackmail the famous manufacturer of sports cars.
According to information published in the newspaper San Diego Union-Tribune, in March this year, a resident of California, named Bruce Mengler managed to crack the site of Maserati North America and gain access to information about the participants of one of promotions held by the company. Then he contacted a representative of Maserati via e-mail and said he had personal information about customers, and offered to buy back valuable information to avoid publicity. Otherwise, the Californian hacker had threatened to put the data to open access.
Last week, Bruce Menglet was arrested by police and will be put on trial soon. At the moment of arresting the “old shark” blackmailed $5000 out of the car manufacturers.
