Managing cursor with your voice
4th September 2008
Employees of the University of Washington are developing a unique program allowing users to use their own voice for managing the computer cursor.
The application is based on traditional technologies of speech recognition and does not claim to be any revolutionary. According to the explanation of the project manager Jon Malkin, it is just a convenient “voice joystick” to move the cursor in four directions by means of pronouncing different vowels.
Despite the seeming simplicity, the new product can used to deal with fairly complex tasks. Malkin says that one of artists with the help of Vocal Joystick and simple graphical editor has managed to create an impressive picture.
Vocal Joystick can be well used both for entertainment and as an alternative interface for people with disabilities.
