PC-BSD 7.0: new version of FreeBSD for desktops
29th September 2008
A new version of PC-BSD 7.0, code-named Fibonacci has come out. It is the free operating system based on FreeBSD and meant for use under desktop computers.
Such a significant increase in version of this system (the previous stable release was 1.5.1, and now it is already 7.0) is linked to the fact that the developers decided to synchronize the versions numbers of PC-BSD with FreeBSD.
The release of PC-BSD 7.0 is based on the branch of FreeBSD 7-STABLE, while the basic graphical environment is KDE 4.1.1. Among other innovations there is the support of file systems ZFS and UFS2 (with UFS2+Softupdates and UFS2+Journaling) and the choice of FS during the installation; installation of DVD, USB or network; moving a set of tools PC-BSD to interface Qt4/KDE4; significant improvements in hardware support security; improving system performance by improving the scheduler ULE.
