30% antivirus solutions sucked at Virus Bulletin test
16th October 2008
To successfully pass the test, a program must using the default settings, recognize all existing at the moment malware, both in the scanning mode on demand, and in the mode of resident protection. In addition, the program should not give misleading results when checking a set of deliberately clear files.
One-third of the products tested failed to pass the test. Among “failed” antivirus solutions there are several well-known names: Avira AntiVir (1 misoperation), F-Secure (1 misoperation), Kaspersky Anti-Virus (1 misoperation), MWTI eScan Internet Security (1 misoperation), Quick Heal AntiVirus (1 misoperation), Arcabit ArcaVir (93 missed virus, 3 misoperations), CA eTrust (1 missed virus), and Redstone Redprotect (1 missed virus, misoperation).
The list of those passed the test includes: ESET NOD32, Agnitum Outpost, McAfee VirusScan, Alwil avast!, Microsoft Forefront, AVG, Symantec Endpoint Protection, Kingsoft, Ahnlab V3, Norman Security Suite, Rising Antivirus, Fortinet FortiClient, Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, Frisk F-PROT, Trustport Antivirus, and VirusBuster Professional.
In a month, Virus Bulletin is holding a test of antivirus products for Windows Vista x64, results of which will be published in December.
