By-the-second payment for using software: coming up!
24th October 2008
As virtualization technologies go on developing, expensive long-term licenses for using software are gradually dying out, report Symantec experts.
It is possible that in the near future, clients will be offered a more favorable for them licensing model, supposing by-the-day, -hour or even - second tariffing.
Virtualization implies the launch of software at the central computer and transferring necessary data to client workstations stations via the network. This approach allows with high accuracy to identify the length of using each copy of the application.
According to Ken Berryman, the Vice-President of Symantec Endpoint Virtualisation department, many customers already now would rather pay for actual using products, but suppliers still refused to change license terms. However, licenses periods are becoming shorter and one day this model of licensing will become a reality.
Symantec has already developed a prototype of protection system, ensuring the safety of workstations without installing software on them. Equipped with an embedded hypervisor, the system analyzes the code transferred to the client virtual machine and minimizes the likelihood of transferring malware. Currently, the manufacturer is looking for ways to promote innovative solutions at the market.
