Lack Of Information Does Not Let Us Know If The Federal Stimulus Is Creating Any Tech Jobs
26th October 2009
An obvious question that follows up to the announcement of the U.S. government this month that the federal stimulus created or saved 30,000 jobs is this that how many of the IT and engineering jobs were there?
No information is available at Recovery.gov that concerns the types of jobs which are either saved or have been created from $16 billion in contracts awarded till now, representing 2% of the stimulus of $787 billion.
Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board provides Recovery.gov that is designed to track funding by the citizens, posts only what it gets in the reports from the recipients. A board spokeswoman said that they are not analyzing in terms of the types of jobs. She further added that this sort of analysis might be made at some later point of time, once they get additional recipient reports on loans and grants posted on the official web site but there seems no time frame to provide it.
The website Recovery.gov site has interactive maps and also the spreadsheets which show companies that have been receiving the data, the number of jobs that have been created or saved, and also a description of some of the work.
Craig Jennings, a senior policy analyst for a nonprofit government watchdog group OBM Watch said that the above mentioned website falls short in many respects in helping the users understand spending.
