Los Angeles Has Agreed To Use The Plan Of Google Web Services

29th October 2009

The City Council members on Tuesday have tentatively approved a proposal which is multimillion-dollar to tap the Google Inc. for the purpose of government e-mails and for some other Internet services, which is a boon for the Web giant as it is seeking to wrest the market share for Office software that is developed by the rival company Microsoft Corp.

The Council has voted unanimously for an amount of $7.2 million deal with the contractor company Computer Sciences Corp. in order to replace many of the city computer systems with so called Google Apps services.

An amendment that had been added shortly before the vote has made its contract contingent on Computer Science by agreeing to pay the preset penalty if any security breach occurs. The project manager of contractor David Barber has said that he believes that they would reach to such an agreement.

The police officers' union of the city and also the privacy advocates has raised the security concerns over the contract of Google because it online places data rather than on the individual computers under the direct control of the city.

Under this deal, Google Inc. will be providing the e-mail, online chatting, calendar, and many other services to almost 30,000 of the city employees.
