Red Hat Has Invested In Enterprisedb By Keeping An Eye On Oracle And Mysql
30th October 2009
Red Hat has been investing an unspecified amount of money in the open source database vendor EnterpriseDB, which is a sign that the Linux vendor might be worrying about the implications of the Oracle's takeover of MySQL through the pending acquisitions of the Sun Microsystems.
This announcement was made by the Westford, Mass. that is database vendor in a statement posted on Tuesday.
Neither of the two companies i.e. EnterpriseDB and Red Hat had immediately responded to the requests for comment.
This move is very much notable because most of current popularity of Red Hat as a server platform is because the users are looking to run free MySQL on the top of Red Hat as a part of the server of Linux Apache MySQL Python/Perl/PHP. EnterpriseDB also sells a proprietary, which is an Oracle-compatible database and is called PostgresPlus, which is based around the technology of open source PostgreSQL.
The two companies have been reportedly edging towards each other for some months. Ed Boyajian, the CEO of EnterpriseDB was also the vice president of Red Hat previously. Boyajian has said in a story on News.com that the investment made, part of $19 million Series C round funding, was really a significant amount of money.
EnterpriseDB took small investment from IBM about one year and a half back, as a part of its move away from the Sun Microsystems, which just had acquired MySQL AB at that time.
