The Naming Math Of Microsoft Leads To Windows 7 By Adding 1 To Windows Vista
23rd October 2009
People were surprised to see Windows 7 after Windows Vista as there was no version 5 or 6 of the operating system. Microsoft Corporation did not miss these versions but with every new version, it tries to give an impression that there was no previous version of Windows. The naming strategy of Microsoft had been very confusing for people.
Long ago, windows versions were like 1, 2 and 3 etc. Then the corporation started to name the OS as Windows 95 followed by Windows 98, while professional users of the OD got 4.0 versions. After these versions, Windows 2000 was launched in the market.
The year numbering scheme failed with the launch of Windows Millennium. The corporation thought of naming then next operating system "01" as naming it "2001" would not work. They named the new OS as Windows XP. Microsoft didn't find any two letter name handy for them and named the new version as Vista. Vista is something you might see out of the window. So there seemed to be some sense with this name. With Vista's explosion, Microsoft was prompted to make a clear break and named the new operating system as Windows 7.
Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft Corporation's president of Windows, said that Windows 7 is a descendent of NT 4.0. Counting XP and 2000 as 5 and Vista as 6, we get to the name of Window 7.
