With the new ArcSight Logger 4 appliance of the company, the users can now also search through the so called unstructured data, like the instant messaging or the e-mail message log records. Logger is widely used for searching already through a kind of structured data that is stored in things like the databases.

The logfile analysis is seen increasingly as one critical tool for identifying the security threats as said by Rick Caccia who is the vice president of the product marketing in ArcSight. He further said that with the increasing security threats and the log management seen as one good way to handle them, the company thought that this was the right time to do the integrated search for both types of information.

Jon Oltsik, who is an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group has said that logger is one useful add on to the other products of ArcSight, called the ESM that monitors the events on a network as they occur in real time. He said that rather than being an alerting system finding anything and then alarming people, you might see some suspicious activity over time and would want to piece it together and with this analytical capability, it is a type of the total picture.
