The flash storage devices like the solid state disks could bring up the given bit of data faster than the hard disk drives as they can reach to it without spinning the disk. Although they are much faster than the HDDs at their reading capability, but they tend to provide less advantage in the writing of data, and all of this comes at much greater per bit cost. So the solid state is not thought to be replacing the spinning disks, but they will sit alongside them and can handle only certain types of data.

Two main ways are there to use flash, which depends on the needs of an organization. Both of them take less space and energy than the other arrangements for the purpose of fast storage, like spreading relatively small amount of data across many HDDs in order to shorten the access times.

When they are inserted directly into a server, the flash can form second tier of data cache below the DRAM, which is such an arrangement that will hold on to most accessed bits automatically until the use of those bits is declined and they move down to the disk storage. In the case of SSDs, the flash becomes top layer of permanent storage system.
