AVG Anti-Virus declared war to a Windows system file
23rd November 2008
The problems arose about two weeks ago after another update of the AVG Anti-Virus 8.
Due to an error in the viruses signatures database the program identified the file user32.dll in Windows XP as a trojan.
The defect antivirus offered users to remove the «dangerous» file. And, of course, what must most of them do, but followed the “good” advice! So, at doing this they sent their computers to the eternity of restarting cycle. Some machines failed to run at all after that.
The company AVG quickly responded to users` complaints and released patches for both commercial and free version of its antivirus software.
The developers also published ways of solving the problem for users, having deleted the wretched file. If your computer had not been rebooted, it is recommended to disable antivirus and copy the file user32.dll from the Windows distributive.
The problem affected users of AVG in Holland, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Similar incidents have already taken place with the Czech AVG. For example, no longer than a month ago the anti-virus mistakenly took for the Trojan the firewall Zone Alarm from the company CheckPoint.
