The National University of Defense Technology of China, which is a military academy, has unveiled this machine which would have ranked fourth in most recent Top 500 list of fastest supercomputers of the world as said by the state media. Xinhua news agency has said that this supercomputer that is named Milky Way, theoretically can perform more than a million billion calculations in one second. The figure, measured in flops, or more commonly the floating operation points per second which is the unit to measure the speed of a supercomputer, would be make it the first petaflop class machine of China.

The data of this machine has been submitted for the ranking in Top 500 list that is next due in the month of November as said by Xinhua , by citing the faculty at university in the inland Hunan province of China. This computer would be used for the purpose of bio-medical computing, seismic data processing during the oil exploration and also for designing aerospace vehicles.

The computer contains over 11,000 microprocessors of Intel and Advanced Micro Devices and have cost of at least $88 million for the build as the agency has said. Xinhua has said that it will be moving to a supercomputing center in northeastern city of Tianjin sometime later this year.
