Google Planning To Use SPDY Protocol For Faster Downloads
22nd November 2009
Google has said in a blog post that they are experimenting to use the SPDY protocol which works on the application layer. With the use of this protocol, the company would be able to increase the download speed of the web pages to be twice as quickly as it can do currently. The purpose of this is to increase the performance of HTTP usage by lowering the latency. According to Google, to get the proper working of this protocol, you will need to upgrade not only the browser but the web server as well.
Google has shared the results of its experiments with this new protocol and have told that the results were better. The downloading time were reduced to about 27 to 60 percent when suing HTTP and when it was experimented using the SSL, the results were better almost 39 to 55 percent faster.
It was also said in the blog post that there are some more amount of work which is needed to be done in order to evaluate SPDY performance in real time environment.
Google has also taken out the test of this protocol by opening 25 of the top 100 web sites 10 times each. They were tested over the simulated connections of home network.
There are a lot of techniques and methods used by SPDY to speed up the downloading process. Some of the techniques are the enabling of many of the concurrent HTTP requests over a single TCP session.
