8th November 2009
Intel has expanded the chip shipment lead of the company over the Advanced Micro Devices in the third quarter as its rivals are battling for a larger market share as according to one survey which was released by the Mercury Research on Tuesday.
Intel has shipped 81.5 percent of the PC microprocessors during the third quarter, with a gain from 81.2 percent of their CPUs shipped during the third quarter in the previous year. AMD has shipped almost 17.8 percent of their microprocessors in the third quarter, which is a gain from 17.7 percent from the previous year.
However, the market share of AMD fell down as compared with the second quarter, when it had 18.5 percent of their market shares, as compared to 80.5 percent share of Intel.
The gains of the third quarter for Intel and AMD too, have come at the expense of the Via Technologies that has seen a drop of its market share to 0.7 percent, as compared to the 1.1 percent in the previous year. Between 90 million and 100 million of the PC processors were shipped in total that have set one new record for third quarter as said by Dean McCarron who is the principal analyst at Mercury Research. Total number of the processor shipments went up by less than a percent as compared to the third quarter of last year, when previous record was all set.
