Microsoft's And Yahoo's Search Partnership Can Go International
9th November 2009
Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer has said on Thursday that the deal of Microsoft with Yahoo under which software maker's new Bing search engine would be used for powering Yahoo searches and Yahoo would be selling premium advertising for both of the companies can also be expanded overseas. He said that it is quite possible that they would be extending this partnership outside of the U.S. but both the companies will have to wait and see until they actually are being able to get the approval and consummate this partnership with Yahoo inside United State and may be there might be some news on that on some other day, he told this to the Tokyo news conference after being asked that if one similar deal would be happening in Japan.
This 10 year search plan was actually announced in the month of July with the hopes of hammering out one deal by Oct. 27 but both of these companies missed this deadline. One day later they said that the talks would be extending for some unspecified period of time.
This deal also faced scrutiny from U.S. Department of Justice that has begun to study if the broader competitive landscape will be impacted by the tie up of the proposed search engine.
Both of the companies, Microsoft and Yahoo, trail in search market behind Google Inc., that enjoyed market share of 71 percent in U.S. during October as according to the data from Hitwise. Yahoo had a share of 16 percent and Microsoft's Bing was the third one with only under 10 percent of search market.
