24th November 2009
The Ciena Corporation took the challenge of Nokia Siemens networks. The company had to pay an amount of $ 769 million in order to get the assets from the Nortel networks. These included the units of optical networking as well as the businesses of the carrier Ethernet.
There had been a bid of an amount of $521 million made by Ciena for the unit. The company had to make its bid bigger up to three day auction. There also had been bids made by Nokia siemens network regarding two of the Nortel units. That network dropped as it had been outbid. The bankruptcy proceedings have been going on for Nortel since the month of January. Nortel was once considered by the market valuation to be the largest company of Canada. The company since that time of its bankruptcy has to sale out the units one by one. Even currently, the GSM-R technology unit of the company has been placed on the auction block.
The CEO and president of Ciena named Gary Smith has said that due to the assets of optical as well as carrier Ethernet, there have been exceptional technologies, scale and talent. These things will speed up the current strategy of his company in order to give innovative network solutions to the clients throughout the world.
