The Navigation Of Google Does Not Spell Doom For The GPS Makers
5th November 2009
The launch of Google Maps Navigation for the Android mobile platform has caused stock prices of the personal navigation device makers to move downwards. It is clear that the investors now fear that the free mobile service of Google, which is delivering real time and turn-by-turn voice guidance and also the automatic routing, will be hurting long term financial performance of the rival hardware and the software vendors too.
Still, this announcement of Google was hardly surprising saying that the real time navigation was a milestone on the mobile device road map of Google Inc. as noted by Charles Golvin who is a principal analyst at the Forrester Research. Golvin has said that the main question for navigation vendors and also the wireless carriers is not of Google eating into their navigation businesses but it is that how they must extend their navigation with some additional value in order to compete with this navigation offering of Google.
It is very easy to see that why the investors are getting worried. With Google`s Maps Navigation, the smartphones can receive automatically the most updated maps and the business listings from Google and the users do not have to purchase these map upgrades or update their devices as noted by Keith Ito, a software engineer of Google Maps. Ito added that this data is improving continuously, and thanked the users for reporting the map issues and also the businesses for activating their listings with the Local Business Center of Google.
