Theora 1.0: final version of the open video codec
11th November 2008
The community Xiph.org Foundation has announced the release of the final version of the open video codec Theora 1.0.
The new product can not boast the same broad popularity as the most popular multimedia codecs, but the product was well accepted by many «open source»-communities as well as the administration of sites providing free access to content, including the famous Wikipedia.
The codec support will also be implemented in the next version of Firefox 3.1. Theora key advantage include the minimal consumption of processor resources, the ease in porting, as well as the possibility of extending codec in public and commercial applications without paying royalties to sales.
Creators of the product are not going to be limited by this and currently their efforts are focused on the improvement of video coding technologies.
The new encoder is being developed within the project Thusnelda, funded by Red Hat, and will be included in the following releases of Theora. The newest version of the software is distributed under the terms of the BSD license. It includes a more productive decoder & can boast full support of Theora specifications.
